The Outdoors Are Booming
And speaking of outside — the great outdoors continue to boom. Will the industry keep surging in 2022? “Twenty months after COVID arrived on American shores and brought with it—in addition to so much hardship—a historical shot in the arm for the outdoor economy, we’ve hit a point at which industry experts are probably going to begin self-sorting into two groups,” writes Andrew Weaver. “Half will say the ride is almost over, expect sales to level off any day. The rest will say we’re still in boom days, folks, and the bubble’s not bursting any time soon.”
REI’s Path Ahead
As with so many other industries, there’s been a reckoning about diversity and inclusiveness in the outdoor industry over the past few years. REI is leading the charge. Black Enterprise has the scoop: “REI has pledged to add at least at least 200 new brands owned or led by people of color to its assortment by 2030, generating $1 billion in cumulative sales and representing over 15 percent of brands sold at REI. It plans to achieve that by creating pathways for newer, smaller brands to access and navigate the co-op’s buying process and growing representation of diverse entrepreneurs industrywide via Path Ahead Ventures.”
TikTok In The Wild
TikTokkers are getting into the outdoor spirit in wacky and wonderful ways. “Technology and nature can seem at odds – the drive to always be plugged in versus being present in nature,” writes CNET’s Erin Carson. “But many TikTokers [are] showing it doesn't have to be that way. While watching a hike isn't a replacement for going on one, it can serve as a moment of peace, a window into a different world, an educational tool, and even an entryway to the proverbial great outdoors.
