It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to start thinking about your 2019 travel plans! Wondering where to go and what to do? We’ve got a few suggestions.
Houston — Space City
Houston, we have an anniversary. In 2019, Space City will inevitably be focused on the momentous 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. But that’s just the beginning of the out-of-this-world fun.
- 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing – Space Center Houston was an integral part of the first moon landing in 1969. Houston is planning an array of events and celebrations for the 50th anniversary. Additionally, the Apollo Mission Center, a National Historic Landmark, is being restored to include a new moon landing viewing experience.
- 50th Anniversary of Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) – The 2018-2019 season of the city’s world class Theatre Under the Stars will be the first under Tony Award-nominated Artistic Director Dan Knechtges.
- Nuit Blanche Houston – This international artistic nighttime event, currently in 33 cities around the world, is coming to Houston for the first time ever on April 6, 2019. For one night only, artists will transform Houston into an playground for a series of contemporary art experiences.
- Major Museum Expansions – Several enhancements – ranging from $30 to $450 million projects – will debut in 2019. Look for upgrades and new elements at Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Holocaust Museum and Stages Repertory Theatre.
Nebraska – Train Country
Contrary to popular belief, Nebraska boasts a diverse (not flat!) terrain. The state encompasses 77,000 square miles of extraordinary landscapes. The state – an important part of railroad history and the birthplace of Union Pacific – is home to a number of national monuments and historic parks that history lovers will love.
- Union Pacific (Omaha) – Celebrate Union Pacific’s 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion during 2019! Visit the place where it all began. Union Pacific broke ground in Omaha in December 1863, with transcontinental railroad completed in 1869.
- Golden Spike Tower (North Platte) – Get off at the Holdrege stop and venture north off-the-beaten-path to discover this little gem. This tower offers the best view of the world’s largest rail yard, the Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard.
- Nebraska State Fair – After the state's 150th anniversary the Nebraska State Fair will celebrate it own 150th birthday in 2019.
- Scotts Bluff, NE – This small western Nebraska town is home to a number of striking (and famous) landmarks. Discover Scotts Bluff National Monument and Chimney Rock. In 2019, Scotts Bluff National Monument will celebrate its 100th anniversary as a national monument.
SLO CAL – California Gold
SLO CAL (San Luis Obispo County), located on California’s Central Coast, brings together the best of the Golden State. The area boasts 80 miles of coastline and beaches, the third-largest wine region in the state, a rich history (including the iconic Hearst Castle) and outdoor adventures on land and on the sea. 2019 will be an exciting year for the destination.
- 100th Anniversary of Hearst Castle: While programming has yet to be announced, the centennial of William Randolph Hearst’s coastal castle is sure to be a year-long celebration. Travel back in time to experience the Enchanted Hill and old Hollywood glamour.
- Expanded Hotel Inventory: SLO CAL is welcoming three upscale, boutique hotels opening in early 2019. Book a stay at Vespera on Ocean in Pismo Beach, The SLO-Hotel or Hotel Serra in San Louis Obispo.
- Highway 1 Re-Opening: The ultimate California road trip is back, after mudslides closed it for more than a year and a half. Next year, drive Highway 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles. SLO CAL is located right in the middle the Highway.
- Pismo Preserve: This 900-acre land conservancy is opening to the public for the first time. A pristine coastal area, the Pismo Preserve will debut new paved trails and public facilities conducive to outdoor recreation.
