TURNER World Travelers: From Austria to Thailand

Written by Tyler Wilcox | October 13, 2016
A few TURNER team members indulged in a little globetrotting recently. Follow them on their travels.

Kelsey Comstock, Vice President

Where I Went: Greece My Favorite Place: Monemvasia … it’s a magical peninsula where you actually stay, eat and explore within an enclosed castle of historic ruins. And the views … Best Thing I Ate: Taramasalata. I’ve never been very into it here in the states … but go to the source, and it’s gold. Best Thing I Drank: Ouzo … all the ouzo. What I Wish I Knew Before I Went: That the ferries would go on strike in the middle of my island hopping. Turns out this is not uncommon in Greece – so perhaps stick with air travel! Where I Want To Go Next: Morocco!

Caitlin Martz, Senior Account Executive

Where I Went: Thailand My Favorite Place: This is such a tough question. I absolutely loved Chiang Mai – the city has over 400 temples, surrounded by lush mountains (and therefore is very adventure-focused) and the Old City is historic and quaint. That being said, rock-climbing on the limestone cliffs of Railay Beach with views of the islands and turquoise Andaman Sea is hard to beat. Best Thing I Ate: I went to the restaurant that is internationally known for having the best Pad Thai in the country, and it was pretty damn good. But I’d have to say my favorite thing I ate was Tom Yum soup with shrimp (the red chili paste gives it a nice kick) or the famous mango with sticky rice for dessert. Best Thing I Drank: A glass of Sauvignon Blanc at the Moon Bar on the roof of The Banyan Tree Hotel Bangkok – 61 stories high! What I Wish I Knew Before I Went: Thai people don’t have separate breakfast food the way Americans do. They start their day with noodles, rice, and curry just like for lunch and dinner. Keep this in mind if you are an eggs-and-bacon kind of person. While not impossible to find by any means, you’ll have to be mindful about looking for a restaurant that serves the type of breakfast you are used to! Where I Want To Go Next: Back to Asia … Japan is on my list!

Jess Stollberg, Designer

Where I Went: Barcelona and Sitges, Spain and Rome, Italy

My Favorite Place: The Trastevere neighborhood where we stayed in Rome. The winding streets are a step back in time, we stayed in a beautiful flat in a medieval building, and you are surrounded by amazing restaurants. And every attraction is within walking distance of this part of the city.

Best Thing I Ate: Cacio de pepe!

Best Thing I Drank: All the wine tasted pretty good to me.

What I Wish I Knew Before I Went: We learned the first day that "skip the line" tours are completely worth it when visiting major landmarks. So glad we were able to sign up for one the second day when we toured the Vatican.

Where I Want To Go Next: Slovenia, the land of my people.

Deborah Park, Vice President

Where I Went: Germany, Switzerland and Austria My Favorite Place: Oktoberfest in Germany and the Swarovski Crystal Museum in Austria. Best Thing I Ate: Beer! Best Thing I Drank: Beer! What I Wish I Knew Before I Went: Arrive at the Oktoberfest tents very early in order to secure a spot at a table. Where I Want To Go Next: Next up, either a bike tour through Italy or the long hike up Machu Picchu.
