Tips for Excelling at a NYC Public Relations Internship

You’ve landed a public relations internship in New York City. You have the basics down― dress professionally, be on-time, work hard. You’ve heard them time and time again, but what does it take to really succeed at a PR internship in this crazy city? As a former Turner Public Relations intern, I am here to share with you my experiences and infinite wisdom.
  1. Create a To-Do List (& Know You Will Not Use It). Record daily tasks in a notebook or planner. You will have a good road map of what your day looks like and what you need to accomplish. Now, essentially rip that list to pieces. Urgent projects tend to pop up at the last minute. Work quickly and efficiently to complete known tasks early and leave ample time for any last minute deadlines.
  2. Take Notes. Whether you think you will need certain information again or not, it never hurts to write things down. Assume that everything you ever hear will only be said once and make an effort to retain the information. Diligent notes equals less questions, which in turn equals happy managers.
  3. Listen & Contribute. Ask to be invited in on brainstorms and planning sessions. Carefully listen to objectives and offer up ideas. Even if you don’t think it is the best, it could spark the winning idea in someone else.
  4. Think Before You Ask a Question. With a world of information at your fingertips (Google), take the time to do some quick research before asking a question. You will display your research skills and show your managers that you can take initiative and are an apt problem solver.
  5. Have a Personality. Nobody wants to work next to the creepy, silent intern that just stares at them dryly. Smile, say hello, offer your assistance. We won’t eat you… unless we are really hungry.
