The holiday season is in full swing – and holiday business is booming. But in our ever-changing digital age, retailers are still adjusting. What are the best digital marketing approaches? Forbes has tips. Firstly, mobile is essential. “Consumers are now using their smartphones to do preliminary research on products and pricing, as well as making purchases,” writes Amahl Williams. Also, social media continues to grow in its status as the #1 purchase influencer, with “30 percent of Gen X and 48 percent of millennial consumers indicat[ing] that they will use social to find out about products to purchase.”
One retailer is trying to build its Instagram following this holiday season. What’s the approach? Simple – just offer new followers the chance to win thousands of dollars in gift giveaways. According to Digiday, Barneys’ Unwrapped program is giving away a bunch of big-ticket items, including “a pair of Gucci pineapple sunglasses ($1,240), Sidney Garber earrings ($3,200) and an MDNA skin-care set, signed by creator Madonna ($1,390).” All you have to do is follow @barneysNY and leave a comment for a chance to win. It’s a straightforward way to grab the attention of consumers during this busy time.
Beauty brands know that appearances matter – especially on social media. And during the holidays, they take it to the next level, highlighting the most Instagrammable items in their collections. What makes a beauty product worthy of the ‘gram? It’s usually not the item itself – it’s the packaging. “Disposable items like makeup and skincare in collectible packaging [stay] on the gift receiver’s vanity year-long,” writes Forbes’ Janna Mandell. Check out some of the season’s very beautiful beauty products.
Even in this digital age, the human touch is still prized during the holidays. Daniel Post Senning, great-great grandson of etiquette pioneer Emily Post and host of the Awesome Etiquette podcast, says that something handwritten or handcrafted can be even more meaningful than ever. "Honor the relationships and people in your life," Senning told USA Today. "That will never change no matter what technology we have in front of us."
