Summer Friday City Guide: Denver
Summer Fridays are all the rage these days. Offices empty out early and employees escape to kick the weekend off early. TURNER’s been an active booster of this trend for years now – you might call us Summer Friday experts. This year, we’re happy to share our knowledge with a series of Summer Friday City Guides. First up, we’ve got Denver, the Mile High City.
Downtown Denver Happy Hours
Get your summer Friday drink on!

Every day from 4-6pm, Jax Fish House in LoDo delivers happy hour bliss with a seafood-heavy menu. Order east coast oysters on the half shell for a buck-fifty each, dig into chicken & crawfish gumbo for $5 and enjoy delicious steamed mussels for $9. My Brother’s Bar
2376 15th St., 303-455-9991. mybrothersbar.com
For a low-key/old-school Summer Friday hang, hit My Brother’s Bar, just steps from Confluence Park. The Mile High City’s longest running watering holes, it was a favorite spot for Beat Generation legends like Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady. With a great beer selection, a killer cheeseburger and a sunny patio, it’s an ideal place to kick off your weekend.
1650 Wewatta St., 720-274-0650. tupelohoneycafe.com
Located right next to Union Station, Tupelo Honey’s happy hour is very enticing. From 3-6pm, Monday through Friday, get $2 off draft beer pints and signature cocktails. And to accompany your beverages, grab mac and cheese bites and other tasty snacks for just $5.
1475 California St, (303) 893-1888, 54thirty.com
Get above it all. 54thirty is Denver’s most elevated rooftop bar, rising 5,430 ft. above sea level and offering cocktails that are as good as the views. The Prickly Pear Marg, with Casa Mexico tequila, lime and prickly pear puree, may well be the ultimate summer beverage. We’re also big fans of the Spicy Shrimp Lettuce Cups as a small-plate shareable appetizer.
Colorado Active Outdoor Adventure
Summer Fridays in Colorado mean you can get your weekend fresh-air adventures started early.
Red Rocks Park
Red Rocks is well-known for its summer concert series. But it’s worth visiting any time of day. Put on your hiking boots and explore the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail, which winds through spectacular sandstone rock formations, lush valleys and a natural meadow. Then pay a visit to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, which is packed with memorabilia and interactive exhibits celebrating the Centennial State’s musical heritage.
Boulder is just a quick drive away from Denver – and Chautauqua Park offers plenty of Summer Friday scenic delights. With the iconic Flatirons high above, hike the gorgeous six-mile Mesa Trail. Then, reward yourself by exploring Pearl Street’s upscale restaurants and cocktail bars.
Beat the weekend traffic and head into the mountains! Estes Park is renowned as the gateway to the Rocky Mountains, but it’s so much more. This charming alpine village is brimming with life in the summer, thanks to farm-to-table restaurants (don’t miss Bird and Jim), independent distilleries and an aerial tramway that will take you to the top of Prospect Mountain.
Beating the Heat
Cool off at these cool Mile High City attractions.
Denver is blessed with an array of great museums, from the mighty Denver Art Museum to the fascinating Clyfford Still Museum. But for Summer Friday, hit MCA Denver, located just down the street from TURNER’s LoDo headquarters. A shrine to creativity in all its forms, the constantly revolving exhibits here will open your mind and spark your imagination. The rooftop bar / café doesn’t hurt either.
Denver Botanic Gardens
The wonders of the plant world are on full display at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Spread over 24 lush acres, this beautifully manicured attraction is the ideal place to wander on a Summer Friday afternoon.
Never mind the summer blockbuster scene. Sie FilmCenter on Colfax presents the best independent films in a stylish and serene setting. From thought-provoking documentaries to off-beat comedies, Sie is a great place to escape the sun on a Summer Friday.
