STAFF LIST: The Turner Team's Fall Adventures

Written by Tyler Wilcox | August 26, 2015
With Labor Day drawing near, we're starting to feel the pull of fall. Here's what the TURNER team is looking forward to in the upcoming months.

Ghost Town Getaway

My favorite fall adventure is visiting the ghost town of St. Elmo. It is a gorgeous spot for a fall foliage hike, pegged between two Colorado fourteeners, with both the Mary Murphy Mine and Alpine Tunnel trails nearby. For the ultimate eerie experience, there is also a campsite directly adjacent to the Iron City cemetery, which is inhabited by St. Elmo’s deceased residents with graves dating back to the early 1800s.  Amber Steffens

Fresh Fall Air

I’m determined to embrace the fall season this year - goodbye AC unit, hello cool, fresh air! Aside from saying goodbye to the August humidity and scorching subway rides, I’m most looking forward to seriously indulging in some seasonal delicacies; hot apple cider and basically anything involving pumpkin and pecans – yum. Being a Brit, Thanksgiving is a U.S. Holiday I’ve adopted as my own, without hesitation…. along with Labor Day (who doesn’t love a three-day weekend). As with every fall I’ll also be embarking on the annual quest for the perfect warm-enough coat and winter boots. Emma DeVadder

Austin Autumn

A few things that I’m looking forward in the coming months:
  • Going to the Austin City Limits music festival in Austin, Texas the first weekend of October with my boyfriend.
  • Going to my first homecoming weekend at my alma mater, Elon University, in October (I just graduated in May).
  • Fall fashion! I bought over the knee boots this summer and I can’t wait to wear them for the first time with leggings and long cozy sweaters.
  • Fall also means it’s finally appropriate to burn spicy, woodsy candles. Victoria Selover

Croatian Escape

I’m looking forward to spending a few weeks in Croatia this fall. Hiking, kayaking, truffle hunting, and island hopping all sound like a pretty epic trip … and it never hurts to collect a few more passport stamps! Angela Berardino

Rocky Mountain Treks

Not quite fall, but this coming Saturday through Labor Day, my boyfriend and I will be hitting Colorado’s Sawatch Range, hiking and climbing 14 summits above 14,000 feet. We’ll thru-hike some of route and car camp others, but we’re really just looking forward to being outside, hitting the trails in the early mornings and reading, cooking and relaxing in the afternoons. A few of our friends are meeting us during the trip, too, so it will be great to link up with others in the outdoors (and to beg them for food and beverage refills!). We’ve been planning this trip since May, so we’re excited to end summer with a bang. When fall is really here, I’m looking forward to hitting the shoulder season in some of my favorite mountain towns (Telluride, Crested Butte and others) to take in the outdoors and food scenes leading up to the busy ski season. I’m also hoping to camp near the changing aspen groves at least once. Janelle Huelsman

One More Climb to the Top of Colorado

I’m hoping to get in a final 14’er before the season-end! Kelsey Comstock

Halloween with a Six-Year-Old

I'll admit that I fell a little out of love with Halloween in my 20s. But now that I have a six-year-old daughter, I'm enjoying the holiday more than I ever have. It's a blast to figure out a costume, carve pumpkins and go out trick or treating. If I play my cards right, she might even let me have some of her candy.  – Tyler Wilcox
