Social Media Power Players & Twitter's Big Change

Written by Tyler Wilcox | September 29, 2017

Social Media Power Players

There are thousands upon thousands of social media influencers filling up our feeds these days. But the cream rises to the top – at least according to Forbes. The publication has rounded up 2017’s 30 social media stars in fashion, parenting … and pets, or course. You know they couldn’t leave out Grumpy Cat. These are “the power players who've turned their social media audiences on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook into fortunes and empires.” In other words, they’re the influencers you want on board with your brand.

Tweets Twice As Big

Twitter has changed a lot over the years – but this week, the platform announced its biggest change of all. “We want every person around the world to easily express themselves on Twitter, so we're doing something new,” wrote Aliza Rosen, Twitter product manager. “We're going to try out a longer limit, 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming (which is all except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean).” That’s right, your tweets can be twice as long as before (Twitter has started rolling out the feature to select users). That means Twitter will be twice as useful, right? Right? Give us your thoughts about the change – in 280 characters or less – @turnerpr.

Vacation Time Suck

Vacations give us a chance to unwind, unplug and really engage with a new destination. But is social media ruining our precious time off? According to a new study from Expedia, the average person spends about nine hours of a weeklong vacation on social media, and 44 percent of respondents said that checking social media had a negative effect on their vacations. What to do? Expedia has a new tool called “Stay Off Social” that that posts directly to social media for you while you’re actually enjoying yourself. Don’t worry, you can still take selfies. Check it out.

SnapSky

What’s an almost guaranteed way to boost engagement for photos on your social media posts? Beautiful skies. Of course, sometimes the sky won’t cooperate. Snapchat to the rescue! The platform just rolled out “ Sky Filters” for both iOS and Android which can automatically detect sky in your photos and re-do them with radically different looks. Add fluffy clouds, glittering stars, awe-inspiring rainbows and much more. That’s right – your snaps just got a little prettier.

Weekly Moment of Zen

Summer might be over. But you can still feast your eyes on the world’s most beautiful hotel pools.
