Miami is known for its glamorous side and gorgeous beaches. But like most large cities, it also has a sizable homeless and “at-risk” population. That’s where the
Lotus House comes in. As an organization based in downtown Miami geared to helping homeless women, youth and children, it provides sanctuary, support, education, tools and resources to heal, learn and grow. This week, the TURNER Miami team was able to get a firsthand look at the important work the Lotus House is doing – all while lending a helping hand.
The TURNER Miami service day – part of our
Simply Give volunteer program – included an array of activities. This included some good old-fashioned manual labor! The team rolled up its collective sleeves and swept stairwells, cleaned the cafeteria, took out the trash and sorted donation items. The day also included plenty of quality time with Lotus House guests. In fact, one of TURNER’s volunteer coordinators for the afternoon was Cyreline, a former Lotus House resident who is now a full-time member of the shelter’s Operations team. She’s a perfect example of how the organization transforms lives on a regular basis. The team also got to connect on a personal level with the adorable Lotus House kids, playing games, reading to them and helping out with their homework. Most impressive was “The Farm,” where the kids plant vegetables that the cafeteria incorporates into lunch and dinner menus. “We are extremely grateful to the Lotus House for all they do to give back to women in need in Miami,” said Naureen Kazi, TURNER Vice President. “Spending time out of our usual work day to help support their mission was an inspiring experience – and we’d love to do it again soon.” There are countless ways to help the Lotus House, from volunteering to
donations to fundraising:
