The New Ski Season

Surprise! Ski season in 2020 is going to be very different than previous years. But COVID isn’t stopping snowsports destinations and resorts from moving forward with a host of new backcountry adventures, socially distanced slopes and nostalgia-inducing experiences. TURNER’s Whitt Kelly takes a look at the trends that will define ski season in 2020, from the wildly luxurious to the back-to-basics.

Rural vs. Urban

According to the New York Times, most of those who have taken a vacation since the pandemic chose rural over urban areas for their getaways. Destination Analysts found “nearly 40 percent of respondents who planned to travel this fall planned to visit small towns or rural destinations. From the Adirondacks to northern Wisconsin, tourism authorities reported business doubling this summer over last.”

Remote Control

As the pandemic continues, more hotels are offering remote work and school packages. They’re hoping to attract digital nomads and their families. Dozens of Miami hotels have rolled out “Work & Learn” packages that offer rooms as day-use offices with access to resort amenities such as pools. MGM Resorts, which operates some of the best-known resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, began offering a work-from-hotel package called “Viva Las Office” that includes Wi-Fi and some food and beverage credits. And Great Wolf Lodge resort in Pennsylvania has set up remote-learning facilities.

The Private Hotel

Privacy is the hottest luxury item in the hotel world these days, according to Travel + Leisure. “We’re seeing a lot of private-use options, and they are being well received, particularly by multigenerational groups,” says Keith Waldon, a family-travel expert and a member of T+L’s Travel Advisory Board. “Anything with villas or individual casitas is in great demand.” Check out some of the most next level options.
