Bermuda's signature cocktail, the Dark 'n Stormy. It’s no secret that Bermuda and rum go hand in hand. It all started in 1806 when James Gosling, the son of a wine and spirits merchant in England, was forced to port in St. Georges, Bermuda after three months of rough sailing. He was heading for America on a ship loaded with £10,000 worth of spirits, but decided to settle in Bermuda. He opened up shop and began bringing family members (and more spirits) over from England. Today, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum is an essential ingredient in many signature cocktails and food dishes. In fact, two of Bermuda’s national drinks are rum based, including:

Gosling’s Dark ‘N Stormy®

1.5 oz Gosling’s Black Seal Rum

Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer

Bermuda Rum Swizzle

4 oz Gosling’s Black Seal Rum

4 oz Gosling’s Gold Rum

5 oz Pineapple Juice

5 oz Orange Juice

¾ oz Grenadine or 2 oz Bermuda Falernum

6 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

Of course, Caribbean settlers were already familiar with rum. Some of the first settlers in the region enjoyed the medicinal and recreation aspects of the libation. Due to its tendency to provoke “rumbustious” behavior, they began calling the drink rumbullion – later shortened to rum. So Happy Rum Month!
