The leaves have changed from green to golden yellow and fire red, which means holiday festivities are quickly approaching. Between giant turkeys, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie, it’s easy for most people to overindulge on Thanksgiving. Wondering how you can get back in shape after the feast (at least until Christmas)? Below we have compiled the top five destinations to visit to get you back on top of your fitness game:
- Utah – Home to five national parks, 43 state parks, seven national monuments, two national recreation areas and “The Greatest Snow on Earth,” Utah represents the best of both the Rocky Mountains and the Desert Southwest. Visitors looking to stay warm and fit can try geothermal standup paddleboard yoga in the mineral-rich, 90 degree water of the 10,000-year-old Homestead crater. Park City Yoga Adventures offers standup boarding yoga at the crater as well as a winter snowshoe and yoga tour.
- Estes Park, CO – A year-round adventure playground and the base camp for Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park offers seemingly endless outdoor activities for every skill set. Work off Thanksgiving sweets with a number of training camps offered by Active at Altitude. With the running vacations package, coaches will provide support and arrange everything from flights, transportation and meals to a personalized running program.
- Albuquerque, NM – Nestled between the peaks of the Sandia Mountains and ancient Native American pueblos, Albuquerque boasts sunny blue skies 310 days a year, making it an ideal destination for outdoor fitness activities year-round. New this fall, visitors can get in shape with Routes Rental’s “Bike and Yoga” tour. This is the first professionally led bicycle tour experience to incorporate yoga. All tour packages include bike rentals, water bottles, light snacks, Routes’ signature concierge-level service, and a 45-minute yoga session led by a local professional Yogi and set against the stunning gardens and grounds of Los Poblanos.
- Cheyenne, WY – With Curt Gowdy State Park and Medicine Bow National Forest nearby, Cheyenne is a mecca for fall and winter sports the whole family can enjoy. Fatbiking is a unique new sport that requires bikes with large, low pressure tires to ride on a multitude of terrain, most commonly snow. Curt Gowdy State Park, already known for its excellent trail system, began grooming the trails last winter to allow for visitors to explore 8-10 miles of fatbiking trails.
- Bermuda – Located just two hours from most major East Coast cities, Bermuda is an accessible island getaway with an array of fitness and wellness offerings. Vacationers can get back in shape and take in views of the island by running, walking or cycling on the Railway Trail, which spans the entire length of the island. The trail follows an abandoned rail bed that winds along the coastline and passes old forts, brides and mangroves.
