Pop-Up Luxury
You want your luxury hotel to be a lot of things – but one of the basics is that it should be housed in a permanent structure, right? Wrong.
According to Town & Country, the latest travel trend is pop-up luxury hotels … think glamping turned up to 11. “It’s a simple concept,” says Vincent Raisière, the managing director of the Swiss-based camping outfitter Amazing Escapes. “People are increasingly looking for that feeling of being lost, of disconnecting. But they also want comfort. We provide luxury hospitality where there is no infrastructure for it.” Not only will you have indulgent touches (gourmet meals, five-star amenities, etc.) but also designers create the entire environment to bring the soul of the place to life. The Wrong Way
Maybe you’ve been traveling wrong all these years. At least
that’s what Anthony Bourdain thinks. The chef-turned-TV-explorer should know – he spends more than 250 days per year on the road, thanks to his always-entertaining
Parts Unknown show. Ignore the tourist-y spots, Bourdain advises. “There are places around the world that are still relatively under-visited, where you can have an amazing experience for relatively little money,” he says. Among his recommendations are Uruguay (“Affordable, great food, great people”) and Oman (“mind-blowing”). In other words, find your own “parts unknown.”
The Travel Agent … Reborn?
The rise of the digital age has seen the fall of travel agents. But don’t count them out just yet –
say hello to the travel designer. “A travel designer has the time to get to know you as a person,” Marie Sulda, founder of Kaleidoscope Travel, explains. “While they can sell you a package holiday, they may find something for the same price that suits you better. It’s about building a relationship with you and understanding your preferences for future trips, rather than taking an order and processing it.”
Spaceways, Inc.
Your travel designer may be able to get you to some amazing locations around the globe. But will he or she be able to get you into space?
Amazon CEO/richest man in history Jeff Bezos is trying to make space travel cheaper. “The price of admission to space is very high,” Amazon's CEO said. “I'm in the process of converting my Amazon lottery winnings into a much lower price of admission so we can go explore the solar system.” He’s put $1 billion into the rocket company Blue Origin in the hopes that they’ll be able to bring that admission price way down. Maybe we’ll be spending spring break on Mars sooner than you think.
