Off-the-Slopes Adventures for Winter

As fun as they are, you don’t have to go skiing or snowboarding to have an outdoor, winter adventure. Get off the “beaten path” of the ski slopes this winter with these options for a different kind of frosty adventure. Here are some ideas from the clients of Turner PR: Ice Climbing
  • Rocky Mountain National Park surrounds Estes Park on three sides, and offers a number of ice climbing spots, including Hidden Falls, Jewel Lake, All Mixed Up, Petite Grepon and Grace Falls, just to name a few. New to ice climbing? Not to worry! Two guiding companies to check out are the Colorado Mountain School and Estes Park Mountain Shop. Each has guides who know the best spots for climbing (even the most scenic/wilderness climbs) and how to get there, as well as the gear to outfit climbers.
  • If you are looking for a more instructional ice climbing expedition, check out REI Adventure’s Ice Climbing Basics Excursion. New England winters create the perfect conditions for world-class ice climbs to form consistently each season in the idyllic White Mountains of New Hampshire. For those wishing to discover the thrill of this exhilarating and fast-growing sport, this introductory course features a great environment, furnishes all the necessary technical equipment, and boasts outstanding instruction from experienced guides.
  Snowshoeing
  • If you are looking for explorations in the eastern U.S., don’t miss Lake Superior Snowshoeing with REI Adventures. Take a break from your favorite slopes and experience winter on the shores of Lake Superior! This adventure combines amazing snowshoe hikes past frozen waterfalls and sea caves with comfortable lodging in log cabins, cozy fires and fresh organic meals.
National Park Visits and Wildlife Observation Yellowstone National Park is the largest national park in the lower 48 states, encompassing 2.2 million acres. The park houses an abundance of wildlife and has multiple family friendly activities to enjoy in the winter. The “off-season” offers a unique opportunity to experience the country’s national treasures in a whole new way and without the crowds that come in the warm-weather months. Here are two resorts that offer unbeatable locations in close proximity to the park, as well as special programming that allows guests to enjoy it in the winter:
  • Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole - Sitting in an enviable position surrounded by the Yellowstone wilderness, the property can be placed in a class of its own among winter destinations. The resort's Winter Wildlife Safaris allow guests to get acquainted with the stunning local scenery and abundant wildlife. Guests travel in style in a Mercedes SUV equipped with Swarovski spotting scopes and binoculars to fulfill a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity with one-on-one instruction from the resort’s on-site Wildlife Biologist and in-house naturalist. As an added bonus, chefs at the resort offer gourmet provisions to enjoy during the tour.
  Extreme Winter Activities
  • It doesn’t get much manlier than scotch and cigars, but throw in a snow cat tour with top-of-the-line ski equipment and luxury amenities, and you’ve got the makings for an adventurous, winter getaway for the “Perfect Mountain Gentleman.” As part of the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort & Spa “Perfect Mountain Gentlemen” Winter Package, a snow cat tour for two includes an expedition through the winter terrain and a hearty lunch at a backcountry yurt in Vail Valley.
  • If you find yourself with a wild hair for adventure on the east coast, head to Stowe Mountain Lodge (Stowe, Vt.), one of the properties managed by Destination Hotels & Resorts, for a winter zip lining trip that features spectacular views of Vermont’s highest peaks. ArborTrek Canopy Adventures has won awards for being one of the best zip lining experiences in the world, and in the winter, it can’t be beat!
