March 8 is International Women’s Day (and March is Women’s History Month) — so it’s great time to celebrate the many incredible women whose contributions shape our world. Let’s take a moment to honor just a handful of exceptional women who have made a profound impact in their respective fields, from country music to philanthropy, from food to social justice and beyond.
Dolly Parton is more than just a musical icon; she is a force for good. Known for her unmistakable voice and larger-than-life personality, Dolly has touched the hearts of millions through her songs. But it’s her deep commitment to philanthropy that sets her apart.
One of her most notable contributions is the Imagination Library, a program she founded in to encourage a love of reading among young children. Since 1995, it has expanded across five countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland. Today, the Imagination Library distributes over 2 million books each month to children from birth to age five.
As if that weren’t enough, Dolly recently teamed up with Tennessee Tourism to create the Tennessee Playcation Kid’s Guide. This free resource sparks creativity and imagination for families looking to explore the beauty and adventure of Tennessee.
Dr. Tonya M. Matthews is a thought leader whose work focuses on institutionalized equity, social entrepreneurship and education. As a poet and engineer, she brings a unique perspective to every project, blending the arts with social justice and education.
Currently serving as the President and CEO of the recently opened International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Matthews is leading efforts to tell the authentic stories of American history. The museum, located at the historic site of Gadsden’s Wharf, was one of the most prominent former slave ports in the country. IAAM serves as a platform for disrupting institutionalized racism and fostering dialogue on race and equality.
Julie Hook is not just any cheesemaker. As the only woman to ever win the Wisconsin Cheese Makers World Championship, Julie has made a name for herself as one of the top cheese artisans in the country. Alongside her husband Tony, Julie has built a legacy of cheese-making excellence with over 50 years of combined experience.
At Hook’s Cheese in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, Julie and Tony offer more than 50 varieties of cheese, including cheddars aged up to 10 years. Their commitment to quality and craftsmanship has earned them a loyal following. Julie and Tony are also passing down their knowledge to the next generation, ensuring that their family business will continue to thrive for years to come. Pay a visit to their factory or sample their cheeses at the famed Dane County Farmers' Market in Madison.
In the traditionally male-dominated world of bourbon distilling, Marci Palatella is breaking new ground. As the founder and proprietor of Preservation Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, she has become a force to be reckoned with in the spirits industry. In 2024, her Pure Antique 20-Year Bourbon was awarded the top honor at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, beating out thousands of other entries.
Preservation Distillery, which Marci founded in 2015, is the first female-founded distillery in Kentucky, a state known for its bourbon heritage. Marci’s dedication to creating exceptional bourbon and her innovative approach to blending and aging whiskey has earned her a well-deserved place in the industry.
