If they want to thrive, brands need to cater to their followers on social media. But what if the content you share is actually really irritating everyone? Social Media Today has rounded up eight ways that your content is annoying your audience. First of all, wordiness and poor writing is always a turn-off. Use clear, concise terms! Same goes for design — a poorly designed piece of content is an instant “unfollow.” Interestingly, personalization is unpopular. For many users, a brand that comes across as overly familiar is just plain creepy.
Another good way to lose your social media audience? Inaccurate content. Fortunately, there will be a lot less of that in the future. According to Poynter, Instagram has started reducing the reach of so-called “false posts” in an effort similar to Facebook in recent years. Daniel Funke writes: “When one of Facebook’s fact-checking partners, of which there are now 52 in more than 30 countries, rates a link, image or video as false, its future reach in the News Feed is decreased and users are warned if they try to share it.” Now, Instagram will be doing the same. Misinformation begone!
Of course, you don’t just need facts on Instagram. You need tools. Forbes has a handy selection of Instagram enhancers that will take your feed to the next level. Owlmetrics looks particularly cool. “You can get detailed information about your followers, such as their gender or geographical location,” writes Joresa Blount. “It also shows you which posts have been garnering the most engagement and can generate a custom bio link so that you can track traffic to your website.”
Social media users still love GIFs. And Twitter knows it! The Verge reports that the platform has just rolled out a new function that lets you add images, videos, and GIFs to retweets and quoted tweets. “Adding media to a retweet works just like you’d expect,” writes Chris Welch. “Tap the ‘retweet with comment’ option and then choose the image or GIF icon in the toolbar.” Your timeline is about to get a lot more lively …
