Science Fiction Fitness

With the introduction of wearables, the world of fitness is starting to look more and more like a sci-fi film. But you ain’t seen nothin’ yet, says CNN: “Swarms of drones follow you while you run, recording video of your workout. Sensors hidden in your T-shirt track your heart rate and how many calories you're burning. Your sunglasses log your miles and respond when you ask, ‘How's my pace?’” These technological advances are closer than you think. Especially interesting are the developments in injury prevention; biosensors could detect fitness-related injuries virtually before they happen. What kind of fitness tech – real or sci-fi – are you excited about? Tweet us @turnerpr.

Stranger Things

The future of fitness might look weird. But the present might be even weirder. Marie Claire UK tried 2017’s strangest fitness trends – so you don’t have to. Things like Balates, a mixture of ballet and pilates. And if paddleboard yoga sounds like a bore, maybe surfset yoga (yoga on a surfboard) will float your boat? We also like Kangoo, “an aerobic exercise class involving Kangoo jumps – low-impact rebound boots that make you bounce – used for everything from cross country training and athletic training to rehabilitation and dance classes.” Give it a read – are there any weird fitness trends that sound appealing?

The Kardashian Influence

How do you get a weird fitness trend to cross over into the mainstream? Well, having the Kardashian stamp of approval would probably help. Refinery 29 reveals how the world’s most famous family is a powerhouse in the fitness/wellness world, bringing new (occasionally misguided) advice to their huge audience. “Thanks to their spellbinding show, relentless social media presence, and popular apps, the Kardashians — particularly the three oldest sisters — have overshared to a point where it feels like we know them on an intimate level,” writes Cory Stieg.

The Future (of Fitness) is Female

Of course, Kim, Kylie, Khloé, Kourtney and Kendall are far from the only women making waves. Self Magazine has gathered together nine impressive women in fitness making an impact in the industry. These entrepreneurs, trainers and influencers are all working to make fitness available to everyone, no matter who they are, or where they live. Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks-Rocha co-founded Black Girls Run, devoted to fitness and healthy living in the African-American community. Julie Ann Kelly’s Haymakers for Hope fundraises for cancer research through amateur boxing events. And model, trainer and producer Ally Love’s Love Squad is an online community that promotes positivity and wellness.
