There may come a time when your dependence on your phone, laptop, or social media accounts becomes overwhelming either in your personal or work life. Your brain is fried from staring at your phone screen, your motivation to meet deadlines is at an all-time low, or you just ultimately need a break from your daily routine. Say hello to the new anti-tech trend: the digital detox. A digital detox is a period during which you detach from your electronic devices to minimize stress levels. The goal is to get back to the basics: resetting your energy levels and state of mind in a restoring environment — a social media cleanse of sorts. No Facebook status updates, no Instagram Stories, no Twitter threads … nothing! Can you even imagine?
With each passing year, technology has become more and more of a priority, especially in the workplace setting. It makes information easily accessible; it allows us to connect with people from around the world; and it gives us the option of capturing images with our fingertips. But these benefits can take up an enormous amount of time and mental energy. In a connected age, we’re looking to disconnect (at least for a little while).
It’s time to break free. In the digital age, a short hiatus from using high-tech gadgets should be regularly incorporated into our lives so we can practice necessary self-care habits. Digital detoxes are a time for growth, inspiration, relaxation and rest. Making this temporary lifestyle change comes with many benefits, such as improving eating and sleeping habits, boosting energy levels, and increasing productivity. Most importantly, the digital detox challenges you to be creative and to use your imagination. Get to know yourself again and have some tech-free fun.
Sometimes you just need to get out of town. Without a doubt, you’re going to need your phone or laptop to plan a trip. But once you get there, try not to be checking your socials 24/7. Digital detoxes are the perfect excuse to go on a cross-country road trip to a tech-free retreat lodge or on a solo vacation to a luxury island resort. We usually rely on taking photos and videos to visually relive the experience we had on the trip and to give our social media followers major travel envy. These digital detox trips will push you to soak in the moment and remember every little thing you see.
It’s time to break a sweat. Since fitness classes don’t require you to actively use your phone, workouts will make you forget about checking up on any updates or notifications. Try a beginner yoga class to explore how your body moves. Go by yourself or tag along with a friend to restore your mind, body, and soul.
